Carson Daly looked right at home when he read the nominations for Best K-Pop at the 2024 MTV VMAs.

When he took the stage, he paid homage to his humble roots at “TRL.”

“It’s an honor to be here for the 40th anniversary of the VMAs,” he said. “For those of you who are a little too young to know who I am, I was the host of a show on MTV called ‘Total Request Live’ or ‘TRL,’ very long time ago. It was the best show, kids going crazy in Times Square, and every day after school, I was with your mother, so please tell her, I said hi.”

“But right now I get to hand out an award to a new generation of fans going crazy for a category that didn’t even exist back in the day,” he continued.

After the nominations were read, it was revealed that Blackpink’s Lisa had won the award.

Presenting the Best K-Pop award was a nostalgic moment for Carson and his fans. The TODAY Show anchor previously acted as a host on MTV’s “Total Request Live” that ran from 1998 to 2008.

During that time, “Total Request Live” aka “TRL” was one of the biggest programs on MTV. The show saw many famous acts take its stage like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears. Not to mention, fans also got to pick which music videos were featured on the show.

In 2023, Carson looked back on his time on “TRL” in a post he shared on Instagram.

He said, “25 yrs ago today, before Instagram, TikTok & Facebook there was TRL. The 1st truly interactive, fan driven show on tv. It was my home for some of the best years of my life.”

He added, “I had the privilege to introduce so much to so many. Music, movies, celebrities, world events & more. All Live, everyday. I’m so grateful for that time & all of you who allowed me (and my T-Mobile SideKick) to be apart of your life. I hope this finds you happy & healthy 25 yrs later. Hey, I wonder if that Backstreet Boys fangirl who yelled at me is still mad? Lol…Good times.”

Carson also spoke about “TRL” in an interview with TODAY.com. He noted that in many ways it still feels like he works at “TRL” on the TODAY Show.

“I’m at the TODAY show now, which, if you think about it, is ‘TRL’ for adults,” he said.

“I just left the TODAY show, where I spent two hours outside with screaming adult fans in New York. There’s so much ‘TRL’ in my day job at the TODAY show. If you were 18 and came home from school and watched me on ‘TRL,’ there’s a good chance you’re 34 now and have two kids and watch the TODAY show. They ask me about ‘TRL’ every day.”
