A family of three, including a 3-month-old, were rescued from a high mountain in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Culberson County, Texas, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) press release. Their identities have not been publicly revealed.
The two parents, both 23, went for a hike with their infant mid-morning on Aug. 20. Around 3:00 p.m., nine miles later, the family ran out of water, DPS said in its release on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Due to the high temperatures at the park throughout the day, they soon began experiencing signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion.
Then, at 4:15 p.m., park rangers alerted DPS, who then dispatched a Pilatus PC-12 airplane to search for the family. The aircrew promptly found the family, and DPS sent an Airbus H-125 helicopter to help in the rescue.
Once the helicopter arrived, a Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) was released from the helicopter to medically assess the family. The officer decided that “a hoist rescue operation was the best course of action for their safety,” per the DPS press release,
Once all three were lifted into the aircraft, they were flown down the mountain and met by ground rescue teams who provided medical care.
DPS released photos and videos of the rescue mission on Wednesday. The footage included clips of TFO personnel assessing the family, as well as footage of the family being hoisted from the ground to the helicopter.
